Diagnostic system for Smart Trams in Tampere

TKE developed a telematics-based diagnostic system for the City of Tampere’s new smart trams in close cooperation with Transtech Oy, part of the Škoda Group

The project combined CAN technology, Ethernet communication, Linux-based systems, and IoT-based data collection to create a scalable and future-ready diagnostic platform for modern tram operations.

Advanced diagnostics for modern tram systems

Modern trams generate large amounts of operational and diagnostic data through distributed control systems, CAN networks, and other onboard communication technologies. Transtech needed a centralized solution that could collect, process, and transfer this data reliably while supporting long-term scalability and future service development.

The purpose of the diagnostic system is to collect information about the trams distributed control systems using, for example, CAN technology and other data networks.

Scalable diagnostics and predictive maintenance for smart trams

TK Engineering’s solution enables a large amount of data to be reliably collected and automatically transferred onto a server. During development, the team focused strongly on future scalability to ensure the platform can support both current and long-term operational needs. The collected data helps improve tram reliability and supports the development of smarter services that enhance passenger comfort and overall travel experience.

The maintenance diagnostics system also helps maximize tram reliability through predictive maintenance. By analyzing operational data, maintenance teams can identify servicing needs before failures occur, reducing unexpected depot visits and minimizing downtime. Accurate and detailed diagnostics also reduce unnecessary “just in case” maintenance work, which lowers maintenance costs and improves operational efficiency. As a result, the system delivers both financial and environmental benefits for tram operators.

Developing sustainable transport technologies

Data collection plays a key role in developing environmentally sustainable transport solutions, and TK Engineering has extensive experience in this field. The company has contributed to several innovative mobility projects focused on improving energy efficiency and supporting cleaner transportation systems.

In Sweden, TK Engineering participated in a project involved designing and testing charging systems for electric cars using a charging rail buried under the road. In Umeå, the company developed a maintenance and diagnostic system for electric buses used in public transport operations.

The application environment of the Tampere tramway project is very much to our liking and a fascinating challenge. The CAN technology also supports the circular economy. As well as creating new solutions, it can be utilised in old, existing devices.
